Monday-ing - February 15

Happy President's Day! It's been frigid in Fargo lately but word has it that we'll be getting a bit warmer this week so fingers crossed. Here's what's been happening in my life:

Building tables. Finally. We've had a giant pile of boards sitting in the studio for about 6 weeks now that we'll be turning into two large dining tables to host dinners. They'll hopefully be done in the next week or so. Also, sawdust everywhere.

Watching True Detective. I've been hearing great things about the show for awhile now but had no clue as to what it really was. That first season though. Wow. Intense. Super good.

Digging these super awesome posters that NASA just released. Need to print off a couple to hang somewhere.

Skiing! Jodi and I headed out to Big Sky, Montana last weekend for a beautiful, small wedding in the mountains. Turned out to be a great excuse to take a couple days to ski.

Monday-ing - January 25

Monday Monday Monday! Here's what's up!

Re-watching the movie Liberal Arts. It's on Netflix. Go watch it. One of my favorites.

Painting the apartment walls. They used to be an odd mix of orange and brown but now are beautiful, bright white. It makes the place look so much bigger it's crazy. And now after also painting the studio, I'd be alright if I don't see another paint brush for awhile.

Reading The Martian. Holy crap! I know that it's no secret but that was one of the most fun books I've read in a long time. Can't wait to see the movie.

Making a smoked salt caramel sauce. I'm a huge fan of caramel anything so this is right up my alley. Now to put it on everything I eat.

Hanging out with my family. My parents and sister's family were in town last week for a couple days to see my new nephew Jude. I'm not crazy about newborn photography but I can make an exception when it's family.

Monday-ing - January 11

Holy Crap! It's 2016!

Welcome to the new year! Man, 2015 was crazy and awesome and filled with a ton of change for me. I'll probably some kind of year in review post later so for now we'll just check out the past couple weeks. Here's what went down:

Celebrating a new baby! My brother Ben and his wife Linsey (see more of them here) had their second boy last week! His name is Jude. He's super cool!

Watching hockey! Jodi bought me tickets to an NHL game in Minneapolis for Christmas and we went this past week. Absolute blast! And we (the Flyers) won in overtime!

Building and painting and moving. So many things! It's been a crazy couple weeks but the new studio is almost done!

Making tortillas. I've been eager to learn how to make tortillas for awhile. Turns out it's super easy. Just buy some masa harina and mix it with water and then flatten them out with a tortilla press. It also turns out that they're really hard to make without a tortilla press. Future purchase, I'm thinking.

Buying some cool old factory light pendants from a place called Bauer Bros in Minneapolis. It's this massive building(s) just filled with old lockers and lights and toilets and tables and everything you could think of that goes into a building.

Here's a sneak peek at the studio:

Monday-ing - December 14

Happy Monday!

How on earth is it already less than two weeks until Christmas?? How did that happen? I feel like December is flying by.

Here's what's been happening lately:

Going to Christmas Parties!! Fargo's been bringing it this month on the holiday party front. I've never seen adults so intense over musical chairs!

Hoping that we get some snow for Christmas! It never feels right when there's no snow at all on the ground.

Photographing my brother and his wife and my nephew Aiden playing in the snow. It's fun seeing their family change every time we go out for photos. And soon they'll have one more little one!

Tasting a bunch of different sodas. I really hardly ever drink pop but I want to have a handful of really fun flavors in the studio for when people come to visit. Some of the favorites so far: Empire's Spruce Beer and Fentiman's Dandelion & Burdock Soda.

Shooting one more wedding this year and then I have a couple months off to relax and catch up on editing.

Have a great week!

Tuesday-ing - December 1

Hello and happy first day of December! There's finally snow on the ground and I love it!

It's been quite awhile since I've done one of these so let's see if I can get you up to date. Here's what's been going on the past month or so:

Traveling though Southeast Asia. Jodi and I spent about three weeks between The Philippines and Vietnam and had a blast.

Eating. A lot! I think we both ate about out body weight in street food. A few of our favorites: Pork Buns, Banh Mi, Pho, Spring Rolls, and Ube Ice Cream (it's purple and made from yams and crazy good).

Getting super excited for January when we move into a studio and office space downtown. It'll be great to have a dedicated space to meet with couples and shoot indoors and host events.

Photographing some of the amazing places we visited. It's always a fun challenge taking photos in different countries and cultures. More to come on this!

Reading an awesome book on wood spoon carving. 2016 might be the year of the spoon for me. I've got a lot to learn but I'm excited. Carving wood down and seeing it slowly come into shape is really satisfying.

Listening to the soundtrack from the movie Dope. We watched the movie on the flight overseas and while the movie is pretty great, the music might be even better. Check it out!

Playing in the snow! I woke up to a white Fargo this morning so Jodi and I bundled up and went on a mission to find some snow piles to jump into.

Monday-ing - October 26

Happy Monday!

Here's what went down this week:

Editing like crazy. It's been a super busy fall and that means that I've pretty much been sitting in front of my computer working non stop past couple weeks.

Exploring alley ways in the rain. It's been a bit of a dreary week in Fargo but I love it. The rain mixed with Autumn gives everything beautiful, muted colors that are super fun to photograph.

Shooting with some iPhone lenses. I've been playing around a bit with Moment lenses and they recently sent me their new macro lens to use during the trip. First impressions: the build quality of them is outstanding and photos look pretty sharp. More to come.

Getting anxious to travel. Later this week I'll be in Asia!

Happy Trails!

Monday-ing - October 19

Happy Monday Folks!

As I sit here writing this, I'm anxiously waiting for the next week and a half to pass before Jodi and I head to Asia. But until then, here's what went down this past week.

Seeing puppies everywhere! I had two engagement sessions this weekend and both couples brought with their four legged friends. It's a dangerous thing to be wanting a dog when you don't have the space for one. Some day...

Photographing horses. I did a shoot this week for a local magazine with a family that breeds Arabian Horses. Despite being from North Dakota, I've only ever ridden horses a couple times. Truly beautiful creatures though.

Starting to pack for the trip. If you're a photographer, you know the pain of trying to find the perfect camera bag to travel with. In the past I've taken camera messenger bags and backpacks. This time my goal is to bring as little with me as possible so I'm just gonna throw one of these awesome Mountainsmith Cubes into a normal backpack and call it good.

Looking at a couple different studio spaces that I'm super excited about. If everything goes according to plan I should be getting a space in January. We have some big plans for what's gonna happen in the space other than just photography. Can't wait!

Have a great week!

Monday-ing - October 12

Feliz Monday! It's starting to feel like fall has finally arrived.  Last night, the wind blew like crazy and the whole building creaked and moaned. Besides feeling like we're haunted, here's what else went down this week:

Starting to look at things to do while Jodi and I are in the Philippines and Vietnam. Cooking classes and scuba diving are pretty high on the list.

Eating a lot of curry.

Working on several different projects that I can't wait to share. I hate secrets as much as the next guy but there is some super cool stuff in the pipeline! Stay tuned!

Decorating my apartment with pumpkins and gourds. Because, you know, fall.

Watching hockey. Finally. The return of hockey has always sort of been the sign that winter is almost here. Who's ready for snow?

Monday-ing - September 28

Whoah! September is almost done! Fargo continues to be indecisive about whether it's summer or fall. This past week found me spending a lot of time in bed as I caught a pretty fun little cold. Here's what went down:

Making soup. And tea. Hot liquids are heaven sent for the sore throat.

Exploring and taking photos with Jodi. I've started making her take a camera with her whenever we go anywhere. She'll be a top notch photographer before long. Check out a couple photos here.

Building a field guide to help couples prepare for their engagement and wedding photos. I'm having to teach myself Adobe Indesign so it's been a slow process but it's looking super cool so far!

Making eggs. Eggbake to be exact. If there's one thing I've learned from being a Midwesterner, it's how to just throw a bunch of ingredients together, toss it in the oven, and have leftovers for days. I pity the hotdishless.

Slowing attempting to add pumpkins into every facet of my life. And the farmer's market is a prime place to do this. Tis the season.

Waiting. Jodi and I leave for the Philippines in exactly one month!
